T1 Diabetes and My Journey

You have Diabetes. What?

Well, I'm a type 1 Diabetic. Surprise, I know. I'm already 16, so this showed up really late. Diabetes is pretty easy to deal with so far, keeping my blood sugar under 200 and eating the right amount of carbs has been pretty easy. Luckily, my carb ratio is 1:10, so the math is really really easy. Taking insulin is also really easy, and it gets easier. I'm really lucky my diabetes was caught before it got too serious. When I got to the hospital my blood sugar was over 400, the next day I peaked at 320 or so, the next day down to 260. Ever since I left the hospital I peaked at 280 and I've been down to 106 at my lowest. I've been so much happier and healthier for the past week, and I'm glad I found my problem so quickly.

Transition Process

The easiest part of this was changing my diet. I don't have to! Type 1 diabetics are fine to eat anything they want, preferably lower carb foods, as long as I count everything. Breakfast is really easy, 4 units for cereal with milk, 3 units for some pineapples, easy. If I'm still hungry, have some eggs. Eggs are free (mostly). They're low enough you don't *have* to calculate them, but you should still be weary of them. Lunch is also pretty easy, most resturaunts have carb counts, like chick fil a. Diet soda is free, so that's really easy. Usually after lunch i'll go for a walk, but at school I can't do that. Dinner is a bit more complicated sometimes, usually my blood sugar is safe by then but counting something like chili or red beans and rice that my mom makes, that is really difficult. Bedtime is easy, maybe have a snack, but even ice cream doesn't hurt my blood sugar too much. Snacks are hard though, gotta learn more about those.

Mistakes

Apparently popcorn is not as low carb as they said. I thought it was mostly free, but it turns out popcorn was spiking me to over 240 every time I ate it. Great. Well at least I figured out the problem. I ate a dark chocolate bar (23g carbs) once, with insulin, and then half an hour later I was at 319. Love that, I'm pretty sure I didn't take my Insulin properly, and I was probably already high before I ate it. So, yeah, be careful around chocolate.
